Luke Wright – The Ballad Seller

THURSDAY, 1 JULY 2021 AT 7:30
Award winning Performance Poet Luke Wright is back with a new show – and its got story telling at its heart

Back in Georgian times we got our news from poetry. Before papers, broadcasts or the internet, ballad sellers would hawk their doggerel on street corners for a penny. Scandalous affairs, grisly crimes, and colourful characters were brought to life in rhyming verse long before the first tabloid was printed. Now Luke Wright has rewritten the very best of these stories for the modern ear: take a trip through the Drury Lane gin shops with the Boxing Baroness; filch oysters by the dozen with Dando, the celebrated gormandiser; and escape the Bull Ring with Jemmy the Rockman. Expect scandal, excess, and beautiful flawed humanity.

Fagin’s Last Hour

Fri 30 Oct 2020, 7:30PM

Produced and performed by James Hyland, Fagin’s Last Hour is an amazing and engaging retelling of Oliver Twist from Fagin’s perspective.
Hyland gives an incredible performance bursting with energy: his impressive vocals and performance conjure up Fagin who is menacing but also a venerable frightened and desperate man. The audience also meets the quiet and shy Oliver, a nimble and confident Artful Dodger, a dark, frightening and violent Bill Sikes as well as a warm-hearted and confident Nancy and even Bulls Eye the dog. Spellbinding. He shifts roles with ease, keeping the dramatic tension and the play flowing. The set, costume and makeup are excellent, evoking the eerie, claustrophobic atmosphere of a prison cell holding a desperate and frightened Fagin…

Triangle Music are an acapella folk trio featuring Mim MacMahon, Sue Manley and Sophie Watson who like to tell a good story through their music. The three ladies have been singing together for a good many years and they compose their own material to perform in a quirky and humorous way.
.I was mightily impressed not only by their chisel-sharp a cappella harmonies, but by the way that they act out the song, to frequent giggles and guffaws from their audience. They claim that the answer to every problem is beer. Show me a folkie who disagrees with that.”…
