Despite sharing his name with one of the UK’s most beloved and truly iconic jazz musicians — a man who even shared a stage with Miles Davis — Dave Holland is making his own way as a jazz performer and successful TV composer. He is, however, still holding out hope that one day he might get to perform with the real Dave, as an actual Dave Holland duo. In the meantime, The Dave Holland Quintet brings together five professional musicians from around Essex and Suffolk to explore some of the more interesting corners of modern jazz, including a few tunes by the original DH.
Rather than another evening of familiar standards, the band digs into brilliant music by composers and players who don’t always get the attention they deserve — alongside a few better-known names and unexpected discoveries.
Expect great tunes, grooves, improvisation and an entirely unnecessary quantity of jazz geekery, stories and trivia along the way.
Accessible enough for the jazz-curious, with plenty for the committed jazz nerds too.
